Overview:
The Registered Nurse Manager (RN Nurse Manager) has the responsibility to determine the frequency and the kind of supervision required daily for the operations of the nursing care staff on the assigned unit. The RN will conduct on-site direct observation, including demonstration of competency by LPN, CNA and other staff who provide services for the patient. Observes for accurate and timely documentation on the patient record and assures that nursing staff on the unit are following state and federal regulations. Observes to make sure other disciplines are compliant with protocols for infection control, privacy of records, dignity and safety of the resident on the unit. The RN Nurse Manager frequently handles multiple assignments simultaneously. The Registered Nurse will report to immediate supervisor the Director of Nursing (DON) or Administrator in the absence of the DON.
Job Description:
The responsibilities of the RN Unit Manager include but are not limited the duties below:
- RN Unit Manager must have strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with the staff to maintain the standard of patient care expected of the staff.
- RN Unit Manager will follow policy and procedures in the nursing facility when performing or delegating tasks and procedures.
- The RN Unit Manager must demonstrate the soft skills necessary to handle hostile residents, families, staff and the general public.
- Will calculate the number of nursing personnel on duty each shift and post daily.
- Practices in adherence to national standards for electronic health care transactions and code sets, unique health identifiers, and security, including passwords and user ID codes, in compliance with the Privacy Act and HIPAA. Promptly Notifies Administrator, or Director of Nursing in the absence of the Administrator, of any known violations such as sharing passwords or user ID codes.
- The RN Nurse Manager must be able to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
- RN Unit Manager will attend daily stand up meeting, clinical meeting and any other meeting that is related to patient care.
- Unit Manager will attend and participate in regularly scheduled care plan meeting, QA Committee meeting, Falls Committee, Discharge planning and any other meetings that the DON deems appropriate to attend or chair.
- RN Unit Manager will review all admissions the day after admission to assure that all information has been made available, such as nursing and other department’s orders and etc. The RN Unit Manager will follow through or will delegate to a qualified staff these responsibilities to provide quality of care for our residents. The Unit manager will bring all information to the clinical meeting after the admission to review with all department heads.
- RN Unit Manager will follow up on all incidents, abuse allegations and investigative procedures in accordance with facility policy and will communicate with other disciplines (activities, dietary, social services, environmental services, administrator, and contracting agency) as appropriate per situation, regarding any complaints.
- RN Unit Manager will communicate regularly with the Director of Nursing regarding any concerns about quality of care, quality of documentation and any other concern that may affect outcomes.
- Will also pass on shift to shift information to the oncoming Nurse Manager to assure ongoing quality of care.
- RN Unit Manager will assist in patient and family/caregiver education as indicated on the patient care plan and discharge plan.
- Coordinates care and activities of daily living with all staff related to patient care, including therapy staff and activity.
Education, Certification Requirements:
Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing. This may be an Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree or Diploma. Must have a current license to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee with no restrictions.
Job Skills and Requirements:
Registered Nurse Unit Manager should have 3-5 years of experience in a supervisor role in nursing as a Registered Nurse in a SNF/NF setting.
- May be required to work another shift or day as necessary.
- Must maintain nursing education hours/credits necessary to satisfy state requirements. Must attend mandatory staff training and staff meetings. Must attend assigned committee meetings.

- Must pass drug screening and background check.
